In vitro fertilization -IVF

In vitro fertilization, short for IVF, is the process of fertilization by manually combining an egg and sperm in a laboratory dish, and then transferring the embryo to the uterus.

Embryos retrieved from a woman and sperm collected from her partner are put together in vitro, which means “in glass”.

The first-ever successful birth of a “test tube baby”, Louise Brown, occurred in 1978.

It was achieved by the team of Robert G. Edwards, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2010.
The first successful case of an IVF baby was achieved by a reproductive team of Tohoku Unviersity hospital in 1983.

It was clearly contraversial back then.

Nowadays, 1 in 30 babies are born from IVF treatment in Japan!

You can say that it is not THAT rare to have a baby from fertility treatment.

IVFは 卵子と精子を身体の外に出し、ディッシュで合わせ、受精をさせる方法です。
1973年にイギリスで一番最初に成功し その後 1983年に日本で成功しました。
