Medical insurance – “Iryo Hoken”

In Japan, employers are legally obligated to enroll anyone that works more than 30 hours a week in the Employee’s Health Insurance program and Employee’s Welfare Pension Insurance program. We have a great health insurance system!

If you have completed foreign-resident registration and plan to live in Japan longer than a year, you can apply for enrollment into the National Health Insurance program and the National Pension program.

Japanese public health insurance covers 70% of medical and dental costs. This includes consultation with doctors and dentists, treatments, prescribed medicines and hospitalization. This insurance also covers 6% of wages lost due to sickness or injury. There are cash benefits for childbirth, maternity leave, and death, but it doesn’t cover costs for regular check-ups, vaccination, abortion, cosmetic surgery, and optometry.
